Abstract

Burning mouth syndrome is characterized by a burning sensation in a mouth with normal mucosa. The tongue is the most frequent site and a condition most frequently found in post-menopausal women.
Several possible causative factors have been proposed in the literature, such as stomatognathic disorders, low salivary secretion, oral candidosis, gastrointestinal disturbances, iron deficiency anemia, endocrine disorders, allergies towards dental materials, and psychiatric disorders. Depression, anxiety and some phobic disorders seem to be common psychological problems among these patients. Burning mouth syndrome can be treated both locally and systemically as well as with combined psychological methods.
We experienced burning mouth syndrome with 48yr-old female patient after extraction. In this paper a case of burning mouth syndrome of the oral cavity and a review of literature is presented.
